How to Use Kaido Former

Introducing the Rios Innovations Kaido Hunter Former- This new former is looking to be one of the most advanced designs to date. A lot has gone into trying to make this effective and very easy to use. All of which will be covered in this page, as well as some videos to help understand and use this tool. I hope this page will help answer a lot of questions you may have. So now let’s get into this new wonderful kit. First Lets share a powder chart for the powder scoops that comes with it.

Cartridge TypePowder Charge (Grains)Notes
Short Cartridge22.5 gr
1858 / 1860 Cartridge30 gr
Ruger Old Army / Walker / Dragoon Cartridge40 gr
Large Walker Cartridge50 grRound ball only

The scoops should be really close to these measurements, although may be off by a grain or so.

Kaido Hunter with the included powder scoops

This former was originally intended for only Kaido bullets. Although it still is, we went ahead and allowed it to use as many types as possible. To help achieve this we gave the mandrel a very specific body shape. At the base it has a taper, but after the rubber ring it becomes a straight tube with a mouth diameter of .450 or really close to it. This size will allow several types of conicals including, Johnston and Dow bullets, due to it having a heeled base. Keep in mind even though the tube is roughly .450 that doesn’t mean you can’t use round balls. We made our papers and included a method with the template to cut a segmented mouth. This method allows for a smaller diameter tube to hug a larger diameter ball. So if you are asking yes, this can use .451, .454, .457 round balls. Although the segmented mouth is a necessary step to make it work.

New rubber ring upgrade

This former has additional upgrades that set it apart from our old former such as new rubber rings that offer better grip and accuracy. With the straight wall mandrel we also added identity lines so that you know which sized papers are being fed. These lines are simply meant so that you know which paper you are currently using. With so many different sizes it is easy to get lost in the process.

With that being said, this means with this one mandrel we can form cartridges for large revolvers like Walkers, Dragoons to your standard 1858/1860 revolvers. This of course can’t be done without our new and included tracing template. The template allows you to trace an overall size which is a walker cartridge. And then has small lines to the side that sets the overall height to the desired cartridge size. This includes sizes for the Walker, Ruger Old Army, 1858/1860 and a small cartridge size for the Johnston and Dow. The small cartridge is so that it may fit in 1858/1860 revolvers without extending over the cylinder face which can cause issues.

We can’t forget about even more features, what if you already have a stack of papers cut and just want to trim them down slightly. You can easily measure with the template, scribe with a pencil and then use the trim face on the template to cut them to size. This is perfect if you don’t want already cut papers to go to waste.

These features just keep on stacking. Because not only can it do all that, but we also made the mandrel itself a powder funnel. So, it becomes very easy to load the powder before you remove the cartridge. Not only can this be used for the paper cartridges it also doubles as a funnel for your revolver. Just drop it in the cylinder and it is ready to go. It works great for Ruger Old Army’s and 1858 revolvers but may be slightly off when used with colt style revolvers.

With so much thought put into one design it is truly a former for most black powder enthusiasts. The majority of these features coming from enthusiasts like yourself who is reading this page. This is a kit truly designed for you by you.  Each kit will come with the former, 2 powder scoops with cups on both ends measuring 30, 40, 50 and 22.5 grains, and a tracing template.
